Ralph is a self-taught artist working exclusively with wood. His carvings reflect a lifelong interest in the natural world and an appreciation of his chosen medium.
For the last 20 years he has devoted his working life to wood sculpture. Prior to this he worked in the chemical industry, the Department of Ornithology at the British Museum and in forestry. Recent years have seen a move away from the formal representation of his chief subject, bird life, to a freer interpretation based upon sound knowledge of their physiology. This more impressionistic approach is often inspired by the wood itself: a particular grain or knot; a forked branch; driftwood and even the lines of a splintered piece.
